Ezra Pound, By The Pound
Welcome! Here we are, another Poetry of Thought Blog! I’m excited! Are you excited? I hope so.
So, who is this Ezra guy? Well to be quite honest, I don’t know much about him. The extent of my knowledge is that he was an American poet, born in 1885. What’s noteworthy about him though, is that he wrote today’s poem for discussion:
“And the days are not full enough
And the nights are not full enough
And life slips by like a field mouse
Not shaking the grass.”
– Ezra Pound
This poem struck me when I first read it, and it means a lot to me for a number of reasons. First, I love that this poem is so understandable that it’s almost simplistic. The topic of time passing us by is anything but simple, but I feel that Ezra Pound with this poem, has completely encompassed the feeling we get when we suddenly realize how fast time has gone by. Quickly, quietly, and undetected, just like the field mouse. And I think it’s an amazing skill to have, to be able to express wholely a singular feeling, without being wordy or oversharing.
The second reason I like it so much is because it very accurately describes how I feel about the passing of time, particularly when the end of the year comes around. As if each day, with its banalities, has smushed all into one, and now another year has flown right past me. Not that my life is boring or particularly commonplace! But it’s the feeling the poem incites. I found it to be extremely relateable in this way. Another thing I found notable about the poem is the picture it paints, and therefore the feeling or tone it incites. To me personally, it’s a picture of calmness, almost a pastoral feeling. Which is crazy to me, because again, when thinking about the passing of time who of us reacts in a calm way? I certainly don’t, I freak out about that stuff usually but he puts it in such a calm and matter of factly way, which I really enjoy. Such talent!
Anyway, what do you guys think? I would love to know. This has been the Poetry of Thought blog, with lots of my thoughts on poetry! Make sure to shake the grass of life enthusiastically, so that it doesn’t pass us by! Please comment and share your thoughts and feels!
Doing my best to shake the grass of life,
